Jack was already awake when Ivy opened her eyes the next morning, his soft gaze roaming her face as she climbed out of sleep.
âHi.â Her voice was soft as she greeted him.
âHi.â
âWhat are you doing?â
âMarveling at my life.â
âOh, yeah?â Her eyebrows winged up. âWhat do you think the most marvelous thing in your life is?â
âYou.â
Sheâd expected the answer. âI think youâre the most marvelous thing in my life, too.â
âThatâs good.â
âDo you know what else I think? I think weâre both being ridiculously sappy because weâre going to be married in a few days.â
âI think youâre right. I also donât think itâs going to change once we are married. Youâre stuck with me being a schmaltzy sap for the rest of your life.â
âOddly enough, Iâm okay with that.â
âGood.â He kissed the tip of her nose, never looking away from her face. âCan I ask you something?â
âUh-oh.â Ivy shifted so she was propped on her elbow and could look down at his face. âAre you about to tick me off?â
Amusement lit his features. âWhy would I do that?â
She shrugged. âI donât know. You seem to have a knack.â
âThatâs true. The goal isnât to tick you off, though. Iâm honestly curious.â
Leery, Ivy moved her hand to his chest and traced the scar over his heart. Had things been different, the bullet shifted only an inch, she never wouldâve met him. It was a miracle he was next to her ... and yet she was convinced he was about to tip her temper into overdrive. âGo ahead.â
âAre you going to take my name?â
Whatever she was expecting, that wasnât it. Her eyes went wide as she regarded him, and it took her a moment to absorb what he was asking. âSeriously?â
He nodded. âWhy? What did you think I was going to ask?â
âI thought you were about to ask some convoluted question designed to distract me from whatâs going on at the shelter. I figured you were going to try to trick me into backing off.â
âOh, well, arenât you glad I didnât go that route?â
Was she? The actual question was a lot harder to answer than she anticipated. âDo you want me to take your name?â
âI donât know. Iâve thought about it a lot and I donât know that I have an answer. Brian has been teasing me about it and the wedding is close, though, so I thought we should probably talk about it.â
âIâve thought about it, too,â Ivy admitted.
âYouâve jokingly said a few times that you were considering hyphenating your name.â
âThose werenât jokes. If I take your name, it will be hyphenated. I donât want to give up the Morgan part of myself completely.â
She was so serious, he had to chuckle. âI donât want nor expect you to give up the Morgan part of yourself. As you recall, I fell in love with Ivy Morgan. I will love Ivy Morgan-Harker and Ivy Harker equally.â
She smiled as he said all the names. âDo you want to know the truth?â
âAlways.â
âI think Ivy Harker sounds like a Tupperware saleswoman.
